Since the beginning of our journey, every day had some kind of excitement or adventure. Even the travel days have a kind of energy about them. Today was not one of those days. While it's generally been cold from the start, the weather has been quite forgiving and we have managed to get out every day. Not today.
It rained. Not some kind of torrential downpour that one marvels at, and not the on-and-off kind that affords windows of opportunity to chase rainbows. It was grey skies and a sort of imperceptible rain that just kind of gets you wet. The only evidence were the tiny rings forming on the otherwise placid ocean water. I imagine Portland and Seattle folks would scoff at my discontent and just say, get on with it.
So today became a stay-at-home day to start thinking about the next phase of the trip, Australia; and to do some laundry. The kids did some school work, and we all just chilled in our fishing hut.... Except for the drive to the next town over the hill just to see if there was anything worth seeing. Was a quick trip. We also went shopping at the "mall" in town to fetch some thank you gifts for our Airbnb host.
Speaking of Airbnb...
We are batting a thousand when it comes to Airbnb. Not sure how we could do this trip without it. All of our hosts (note, we are not staying with them, they just own the places) have been great, but special kudos goes to our current host, Eirik. Yesterday, he took me and the kids out on his boat to go fishing for three hours in the fjord and ocean. We caught five fish, but what we really came back with were memories (we threw the fish back). He was so attentive to their needs and really wanted to make sure they had a great time. On our way back, he suggested that Zane move from the bow to the back of the boat, and then he punched it! We were flying, and the kids were soaking it up. I will always remember how he would be speeding along and just grinning, then turn to me and smile ear to ear and nod. I offered to pay for any expenses (we lost one of his lures too), and all he said was, "oh no, it's good for me to get out every now and then, and I like making new friends." Such a nice guy.
Forgot to mention, when we first met Eirik, we said we were from California. His response: "Oh, Arnold Schwarzenegger!". Geez, all the great things we love about our home state, and that's what got to Lofoten.
Midnight sun:
Autumn mentioned it in her post, but we we're fortunate to get a break in the weather last "night" to experience the midnight sun. It started as your standard sunset experience, complete with colorful clouds and rays of sunshine fanning out like a crown. But it was midnight, and it just kept going. At this latitude and time of year, the sun just skips off the horizon and you get two for the price of one, a sunset and a sunrise. As the sun moves sideways, the clouds have time to evolve and take turns creating different colors, and the rays that peirce the clouds, illuminate the hills and clouds behind you. So it's this kind of 360 experience.
